Introduced by Andrew Birkin with illustrations by Paul Rego. The Folio Society. London. 1992. In association with The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London.
The story of Peter Pan first appeared in book form as the novel Peter and Wendy in 1911. Although the play was written and first performed in 1904, it was not published until 1928. Sir James Barrie gave the copyright of Peter Pan to the Hospital for Sick children in 1929. The play is dedicated to the five boys of Arthur and Silvia Llewelyn Davies, whom Barrie first met in 1897. “I suppose I always knew that I made Peter by rubbing the five of your violently together, as savages with sticks to produce a flame. That is all he is, the spark I got from you” James Matthew Barrie was born in the Scottish mill town of Kirriemuir in 1860.
Binding. Sewn on five Irish linen tapes, the edges coloured using acrylic paints. Covered in Harmatan goatskin of dark purple, Tudor style with a figure of Peter out of the bedroom window. He is placed in my hand made “paper sky” flying. I have placed a silver moon on the left hand corner of the sky. Inside the front cover and back boards I have continued using my handmade paper sky which tones nicely with my fly leaves of suede (coloured warm blue) in keeping with my chosen colour scheme for my design binding. Peter Pan is hand lettered in 36 point York along the spine of this Tudor binding. It captures the play of Peter Pan attractively and warmly, a perfect binding for a very cold winter in North Wales. Bound in my comfortable bindery Crispin, Ruthin. Peter is housed in a protective up and over box, which is covered in mid blue waterproof buckram, lined inside with suede and titled in gold hand letters on the spine of the box and front cover.
