The Garden Of The Night
An anthology of 26 Poems Translated by Iftikhar Azmi.
Whittington Press 1979 Paul Delrue, North Wales, May 2009.

Limited Edition printing of 240 copies, this being copy 44.
Iftikhar's poetry springs from nature and the earth to which he has retreated in the face of the hideous oncoming modernisation of the Indian town, tawdry and valueless. He looks up at the sky, down at the dew speckled leaves, shadows, light, the all important climatic changes, scenes from village life - the bracelets as a symbol of universal faith and security. Beauty is also symbolised by natural things, forest and mountains, like a lost world. To read these simple evocative poems is to try to feel universal through the particulars.
My binding is in full sandy coloured goatskin with a free flowing abstract design. The binding has been sewn on six linen tapes, leavingthe edges deckled and the top edge gilt. End papers are in dark blue, matching the suede end leaves with hand made paper doublures. My design is flowing with blue onlays, blind decoration, with the title up the spine. Hand lettered in 18 point York. Richard Kennedy's illustrations are perfection to the text, simple and beautiful. The book is housed in a protective box (up and over) covered in daek blue buckram, lined inside with blue suede, matching the books flyleaves. It is a very different 'Delrue' binding but I feel it works well and well suited to the Whittington Press.
